Frequently Asked Questions

Pick your top 5-6 images, getting fixated on one image that may not work on a pixel quilt and trying to make it work can result in a pixel quilt that you end up not happy with. Try each image and I can guarantee that one or two will ‘pop’ more than the others.

The easiest way whilst we are working on a save function for you is to open a new browser for each image. You can then switch between images and see which one you like the best and narrow it down from there.

Clear, high resolution images free from shadows work best. Shadows are the hardest thing to work around, especially with portraits because they take out details. Taking the background out of your image can also really help to make the focus of the quilt ‘pop’ there are a variety of free online websites to help you do this (if you have an iphone, this can also take a background out) try the image with the background and then without and see which one works best.

There are a few ways that you can reduce the pixel count, the first is to take out the background (see information above) Once the background is out, play with the crop feature and crop some of the image out. People generally try to centre their image, but play with having more white/blank space, not only is this a great way to reduce pixels, it also makes for a striking quilt!

Another way of reducing the pixel count is to take down the number of colours in the image, play with the number of colours. Many people think that more colours = a better quilt but more colours can sometimes muddy the image and I have found my sweet spot is usually between 8-14 colours.

The last way of reducing pixel count is to reduce the level of detail, this is a great way that gives a more abstract quilt.

Yes! Just click on the colour that you would like them to be and click on the image to get rid of them

Sorry no. This website is for personal use only. There are lots of copyright issues surrounding patterns and images used that aren’t yours. In order to protect myself, I am not going to get involved with this and by using this website you are agreeing that you will create a quilt that is for personal use only.

My time is really limited right now, but I will try to offer a couple of design slots per month. If there any available you can find the details on the ready made patterns shop page.

I do! Check out the Talks & Workshops tab for further details.

Right now, I only have large quilts (1.5” pixels roughly 92” x 74”) and medium quilts (1.25” pixels roughly 72” x 54”) available. You can convert the pattern to 1” pixels and make a much smaller quilt, but this will be all down to your workings out! Using interfacing like that from Quiltsmart (Pix Grid) can help you will making such small pixels, but right now I am unable to convert the pattern for you.

I do my best to work with many charities and help them, drop me a message at dee@pixelquilts.com Please bear in mind that I get a lot of requests so the longer you can give me, the better and there are times that I do just have to say no.
